Choosing a camp for your child

2012 Summer Programs

Parents have much to consider in choosing a camp for their child. What's there to do? What skills will they learn? What will make them "want to go?"

Many questions are asked of Warm Beach Camp by parents considering us for their child's summer camp. Here's a sample of what we are asked:

Q: How are staff selected, trained, and certified?
A: Staff are selected after review of a lengthy application, four independent references, one or more interviews, and a national background check. Staff are trained for a week in the concepts, activities, procedures, and safety protocols of camp. Lifeguards are Red Cross Certified. Wranglers are certified by Certified Horsemanship Association. Challenge Course staff are trained according to the standards of the Association of Challenge Course Technologies. All staff have basic First Aid and CPR.

Q: How involved are the counselors in the camper's day?
A: One of the unique features of Warm Beach Camp is the level of involvement by our staff in the daily experience of campers. W-Bar-B Camp counselors not only make sure kids get to activities like swimming, horseback riding, the climbing tower, and high ropes course, but they participate in the experience with the kids. Additionally, counselors lead the games and crafts, perform the skits, and share in the chapel times worshipping God. Horse Camps are intentionally small with three counselors in Bayview Ranch House and five wranglers at the stables. Staff are role models for campers demonstrating godly character and healthy life skills. There is no better way to teach than to live the message in relationship.

Q: What kind of medical staff are available?
A: Each week, two nurses are on duty. They follow protocols outlined in a Doctor's Standing Orders. Additionally, all of the staff are trained in First Aid and CPR. Local EMS is literally three minutes from the Camp. The Fire Department is less than a mile from the Camp entrance.

Q: What will the kids do?
    A: Here's a typical W-Bar-B Ranch Camp schedule.
8:00am  - Breakfast and cabin clean-up
9:00am  - Cabin Bible Study
10:00am  - Activities, theme related games, crafts and events, swimming, snack shop, cabin take-off time, and seminars (jr high only)
12:00pm  - Lunch
1:30pm  - Activities including theme related games and events, swimming, snack shop, cabin take off time, and seminars (jr high only)
5:30pm  - Dinner 6:15pm -Evening Activities designed to be an "all camp event" rather than a small group gathering
9:15pm  - Lights out for Jr Camps (4 - 6 grades)
10:00pm  - Lights out for Jr High Camps (7 - 9 grades)
Horse Campers do riding lessons, trail rides, and other horse-related activities most of the day. They also have opportunity to go swimming and may be able to try the challenge course.

We are grateful to each parent who entrusts their children to us. Summer Camp is a sacred trust between the parent and the Camp. We are dedicated to helping children and young people grow physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.

Partners in Ministry members have a huge impact on the scope and success of the ministry of Warm Beach Camp. Over the years, those who give and those who volunteer have literally been a backbone of strength, the silent partner of every camping session, sharing together in the joy of each victory. I hope to see you there!

Summer is coming and we could use your help!

WW_Volunteers_A_240Memorial Day Working Weekend is a long-standing volunteer event here at Warm Beach Camp. Many of the Camp’s veteran volunteers come back for this event year after year. They have their favorite jobs and love the fellowship, but many of our newer volunteers may not even know what Memorial Day Working Weekend is.

Working Weekend allows the Camp to prepare for its summer program season by asking volunteers to come and help spruce up the place. This is a great opportunity for individuals and civic, school and church groups to get involved in their community. When asked, several long time Working Weekend volunteers said that what they liked best was the fun of working alongside other people. “I love getting a pair of heavy duty pruning sheers and whacking away at something. It’s really gratifying,” said one.

Volunteers paint, garden, clean, sew, chop wood, power wash, set up tents, help with crafts, and Lights of Christmas projects, or help in child care.

This year, the event runs from May 25-28. Volunteers who are staying on grounds arrive and get settled in on Friday night. After breakfast on Saturday, work begins at 8:30 and goes till 5:30. Sunday is a day of rest, and then it’s back to work on Monday morning.

Volunteers work through the afternoon, enjoy supper together, and then head on home. If you can only make it for one of the work days, we would still love to have you! You are welcome to stay with us while you volunteer or commute from home. Housing, meals and insurance are provided for a small fee.

A Ministry that is Impacting Thousands of Kids

WB_Horse_240With summer right around the corner, registrations are coming in for the summer youth camps. It also means that we are receiving requests for help through the Kids 2 Camp program. Without financial assistance, some of the children and youth who will be coming this summer would be unable to experience their week at camp.

A number of these kids come from churches and social service agencies who are working with at-risk youth. For many of these kids, a week at summer camp at Warm Beach can be a life-changing experience. In a caring and compassionate environment, each child is presented with the love and gospel of Jesus Christ.

Last year, more than $121,000 was given for Kids 2 Camp scholarships, helping over 1,200 children, youth, and adults attend events at Warm Beach Camp. With the tight economy, we know that the need for help will continue this year.

We are determined to leave no one behind. Because of the generous help of many, many people, we have been able to keep that commitment for the last nine years. During this time, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been given for the Kids 2 Camp program, and thousands of young lives have been touched.

If you would like to help, you may give a gift through our website, or mark your gift for the Kids 2 Camp program and mail it to the Camp.

Update on Projects - May 2012

Here is the latest news on the Camp projects currently underway:

  • THEY ARE OPEN!!! There are still a few finishing touches that are needed to complete the project, but the new restrooms on the main floor of Cedar Lodge were opened for the first time this past weekend for Women’s Retreat. We thank all of our guests, who of the past several months, have been patient and understanding for the noise, mess, and inconvenience. We also thank all of the people who have given financially to make this project possible. Next time you are on the grounds, take a look at the new restrooms!

  • Chinook_Work_Party_2-240The Special Friends Camping program is moving to Chinook Village this summer. To get this facility ready to meet the special needs of this group, we have a series of projects to complete. The funds needed for this project are coming from Men’s Advance and Refresh Women’s Retreats. We are also very grateful for a grant awarded from the Jeannie and David Brenner Fund through the Greater Everett Community Foundation. The Camp staff had a half-day work party recently to get the project started. A group of men are coming from the Mars Hill Church in Bellevue, and Memorial Working Weekend participants will also be helping. We are excited to see these improvements create a safe, welcoming environment for the Special Friends.

  • A number of projects are in different stages of planning, work, or completion this spring. Much of the firewood for summer is cut and stacked, and the remainder will be done by Working Weekend. Habitat planting is in progress and going well. Volunteers have painted and deep-cleaned two of the staff dorms, getting ready for summer. An Eagle Scout group is designing and building shooting stations for our BB-gun and Archery Ranges at W-Bar-B Ranch. A volunteer group from Stanwood tore off the leaking and broken corrugated roofing over the Cedar Lodge deck and a new roof is being installed. New sound system cabinets and equipment are being installed in Program Center Rooms A and B by volunteers.

  • Projects we are still working on this spring and summer include landscaping and painting the exterior of the new Cedar Lodge addition, assembly and installation of new park benches, installing new front entrance signs, renovation work on several staff cottages, installing new chemical storage for the pool, expanding parking and consolidating storage for The Lights of Christmas, and installing buffer planting and putting up signage as required by our conditional use permit.

If you would be interested in volunteering to help with any projects, whether you have a few hours or a few days, contact Jessica Wilson at the Camp.
