Volunteering: The Best Gift You Can Give
Every winter, The Lights of Christmas in Stanwood, Washington, transforms Warm Beach Camp into a breathtaking winter wonderland — a place where over a million twinkling lights illuminate the night sky, joyful music fills the air, and hearts are warmed by the true meaning of Christmas. But behind the magic lies something even more beautiful: the hundreds of volunteers who make it all possible.
Volunteering at The Lights of Christmas isn’t just an opportunity to give back — it’s an invitation to be part of something extraordinary. From setting up dazzling light displays to serving cocoa with a smile, every role plays a part in creating memories that last a lifetime.
Be Part of a Life-Changing Holiday Experience
As volunteer Kay Kidwell shares, she and her husband first caught “The Lights of Christmas fever” while serving at Warm Beach Camp. What began as simple curiosity quickly turned into a deep passion for the event. “The only cure,” she said, “was to go and serve the whole event season.”
In October and November, volunteers help bring the show to life by building set pieces, stringing lights, painting decorations, and delivering promotional materials to local churches and businesses. It’s a joyful season of teamwork, laughter, and anticipation as the event begins to take shape.
When the gates finally open each evening, the transformation is complete. Around 60 staff and volunteers gather nightly for devotions, prayer, and announcements before welcoming thousands of guests. “No two nights were ever the same,” Kay remembers. “The excitement was like childhood Christmas mornings all over again.”
Bring Joy to Others — and to Yourself
From parking attendants waving traffic with glowing wands to smiling greeters welcoming guests, volunteers are the heart of every magical moment. Kay fondly remembers her husband, Kurt, who became a local favorite as he danced through the parking lot, spreading laughter with his lighted wand and festive hat.
Kay herself served as the “Joy Ambassador,” helping families pose for photos at the giant illuminated JOY sign and introducing visitors to Bruce the Spruce, the talking Christmas tree who delighted guests with his jokes. “Many couldn’t figure out how he worked,” she says with a laugh, “and I’ll not divulge the secret!”
For two weeks, she even donned the red dress and lace bonnet of Mrs. Claus, sitting beside Santa and witnessing countless children — and parents — beam with holiday joy. “Guess who smiled the most?” she said. “The parents!”
A Million Lights and One Message of Hope
Of course, the star of the show is the lights — over one million of them! From glowing toy soldiers and candy canes to animated snowmen and reindeer, every scene is a celebration of the season. But for many volunteers, the highlight is the larger than life, all-white Nativity scene.
As cars round the bend and the Hallelujah Chorus begins to play, the playful holiday tunes give way to awe and reverence. “The goose bumps on my arms weren’t from the cold,” Kay says. “It was the Holy Spirit reaching hearts in celebration of Jesus’ birth.”
That powerful moment captures the heart of what The Lights of Christmas is all about — sharing hope, joy, and the love of Christ through light, music, and community.
Join the Celebration
Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles — from costume charter helpers and parking attendants to set construction and community promotion. Whether you can give a few hours, a weekend, or the full season, every bit of help makes a difference.
When you volunteer, you’ll receive more than just a shift schedule. You’ll gain new friendships, experience the joy of serving others, and play a vital role in spreading the true spirit of Christmas to thousands of visitors each night.
