Letting go of the reins of perfection
Ever since I was a kid, perfectionism has always been a struggle of mine. Whether it was a board game, a big test at school, or a lesson on horseback, my goal has always been perfection and strong performance. Riding horses — the thing I love the most — became a personal challenge centered on how perfect my ride could be. The true joy I once felt when riding had nearly disappeared because of the looming shadow of perfection that hung over me every single time I got in the saddle.
During this time, I was riding a treasure of a horse who began to teach me an important lesson: perfection is not the goal. Most importantly, the many horses I’ve had the opportunity to ride over time have taught me that my performance in the arena does not determine my true worth in God. God says, I am truly and dearly loved, created fearfully and wonderfully for the purpose of glorifying Him in everything I do.
2 Corinthians 12:9 is one of my favorite verses to flip to in my Bible when I feel the pressure of perfection coming on:
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
God does not expect perfection. In fact, this verse emphasizes that His power is made perfect not in our best moments or flawless performances, but in our weakest moments. Through my struggle with perfectionism in my riding, horses have taught me that perfection will never be achieved — and that is ok. Riding is not about perfection but about learning and growing in your relationship with your equine partner. I can let go of finding my worth in perfection on horseback because my worth is secure in the all-knowing, all-loving, unchangeable God.
