The Lord is Our God

Deuteronomy 6:4 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/deu.6.4.NLT The Israelite people were about to make a significant transition that had taken several decades. The journey from being slaves in Egypt was about to change upon entering the promised land. The promised land was abundant in nearly every way. Good soil, plentiful water and established infrastructure were awaiting the people of Israel. In the promised land were also ...

In Every Part of Our Lives

Photo by Debby Hudson on Unsplash Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Galatians 5:25 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/gal.5.25.NLT Even in following Jesus, it is easy to get fooled within everyday life about what is right and true. There is a profound need to be intentional throughout the day about God and His ways. Religious structure can unintentionally become more important than the life giving freedom provided by the Holy ...

Love God, Love People

Photo by Helena Lopes on Unsplash Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37, 39 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/mat.22.37-39.NLT   In Matthew chapter 22, the religious leaders were trying to trap Jesus with “gotchya” questions intended to discredit him. With each one, Jesus responds with words that have taught everyone who has read or heard them the truth ...

Photo by Guillaume de Germain on Unsplash Jude 1:20-21 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/jud.1.20-21.NLT Kids are taught from an early age what needs to be done to stay safe. Do any of these sound familiar?: ...

Love, Action, and Authority

Photo by Mark Duffel on Unsplash Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning. 2 John 1:6 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/2jn.1.6.NLT In mainstream American culture, it is increasingly rare to see the words “love, action, and authority” in the same sentence. Somewhere along the line the underlying view of authority became associated more with power than with love. Often in the public eye, what gets attention ...

Great Expectations

Photo by Samuel Zeller on Unsplash All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 1 Peter 1:3 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/1pe.1.3.NLT Growing up I read a classic book titled Great Expectations. It was a story of a young man living in a difficult time. The young man was filled with potential and drive, ...

A New Way…

Photo by Free To Use Sounds on Unsplash 2 Corinthians chapter 3 tells of a new way. As you read below, the scripture is in plain text. My reflections are presented in bold italic.  Are we beginning to praise ourselves again? Are we like others, who need to bring you letters of recommendation, or who ask you to write such letters on their behalf? Surely not! We are so vulnerable to seeking our own praise. We want endorsements. The challenge ...

Time to Stop Talking?

Photo by Kristina Flour on Unsplash Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. Proverbs 10:19 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/pro.10.19.NLT   Have you ever dug a hole with your words? I have. The hole got bigger and deeper the longer I talked. I should have just kept my mouth shut. Words are an accelerator. When spoken in a stream of rapid interaction, words often take us to a place we did not intend. Proverbs says we end ...

A Gate and a Path

Photo by Julian Hochgesang on Unsplash “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way.  But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. Matthew 7:13-14 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/mat.7.13-14.NLT Everything about God’s Kingdom is available to anyone, anywhere, anytime, through Jesus Christ. He is the way, truth, and life. Never Give Up

Photo by Jeremy Perkins on Unsplash Take time to read and reflect on God’s word with me.  We never give up. “Therefore, since God in His mercy has given us this new way, we never give up. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.” 2 Corinthians 4:1-4 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/2CO.4.1-4.NLT If the Good News we preach ...

Let’s Stop Judging and Start Listening with Compassion

Photo by Artem Maltsev on Unsplash “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.  For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. Matthew 7:1-2 NLT https://bible.com/bible/116/mat.7.1-2.NLT A professor stood at the front of a classroom of students pursuing their master’s degree in Educational Counseling. Truly

Photo by Aarón Blanco Tejedor on Unsplash O Lord , if you heal me, I will be truly healed; if you save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for you alone!
