A Camp Where Disabilities Do Not Equal Limitations

This year, Warm Beach Camp kicked off the summer with Special Friends Camp which is specifically designed for adults with developmental disabilities. Campers enjoyed WBC’s fun activities which include: singing songs, swimming, train rides, horseback riding, the ropes course, and the climbing tower. Activtities are designed to accommodate every individual, regardless of their physical limitations. A recreational staff member, David Lawless said, "One camper didn’t have the mobility or the strength that it takes to climb the ropes course. So ...

Update on Projects – August 2010

Here is the latest news on the Camp projects currently underway: Projects planned for the Stables include running a water line out for a winterized watering trough, and collecting and piping away the runoff water from the roofs of all the buildings to an area away from the manure shed to help protect the environment. This work will be done as manpower is available. We continue to work with building engineers and the architects on the final building plans for ...

Are you “will” prepared?

You’ve been thinking about it. You know you need to make some plans, but there just never seems to be a good time! Sound familiar? The assets you own when you die comprise your estate. Your will is the primary instrument to determine how these assets will be disbursed after your death. It provides a way to care for the people and organizations important to you now, after you're gone. Dying without a will means that the state will determine ...

Mailroom volunteers are manning a nerve-center

“I started out working in the mailroom” typifies a common perception of the mailroom clerk being an entry-level job. At Warm Beach Camp, the mailroom is a nerve-center for the organization, handling all the daily incoming and outgoing mail. That can be a couple hundred of pieces in each direction! In the summer, the volume explodes with mail coming in for the 45 or so summer staffers and even more mail for the kids attending camp. It all has to ...

A final gift to say “Thank You”

By Ben Hagglund How do you say “thank you” to a place and ensure that others have the same opportunities for life-changing and life-saving experiences? As a boy, I was hooked at Father & Son Retreat. And Day Camp sealed the deal. As a second and third grader, my initial experiences at Warm Beach Camp were beyond comparison. The following year, I spent two weeks in a row at camp: Family Camp and then Chinook Camp, with my birthday in the ...

Embracing the Vision Campaign keeps the path clear to the cross

By Nancy Nelson, Development Director It was down to the wire at 11:30 am on December 31, 2009, when the last commitment came through enabling Warm Beach Camp to claim the $490,000 M.J. Murdock grant for the renovation of Cedar Lodge. And yes, I did dance on my desk, as promised. There’s a picture hanging in my office as proof. The Cedar Lodge project is part of the “Embracing the Vision” Campaign begun in 2006. It means that public restrooms ...

Before you plan that next short-term mission trip…

By Mark Cutshall It’s called the Warm Beach Camp Challenge Course, and for 15 single adults from First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, it proved to be one the most useful tools to prepare them for their upcoming short-term mission to Guatemala. “The series of interactive trust-based challenges allowed us to think, work, play and celebrate together. We got to know each other and really learn that, on a mission trip, everyone’s voice and everyone’s gifts are important and needed. It ...

Towering achievement: Outdoor Education camps touch schools

By Mark Cutshall He was one frustrated, angry fifth-grade boy. Frustrated by looking up at the top of a climbing tower he knew he could never reach. And angry with his teacher, Marcie Trudeau, who wanted the best for him and was willing to say, “You know our class motto, Jeremy. You can at least give it a try. You never know what you can accomplish.” And so grudgingly, Jeremy strapped in to the harness, swallowed hard, and with 27 ...

Special Friends Camp: four remarkable summer opportunities

By Mark Cutshall Crystal is almost deaf. Yet, she changed volunteer Kiya Tafoya forever at Special Friends Camp, a day camp uniquely designed for adults, age 15 and up, with developmental, emotional and physical needs. “One day during worship, we were dancing in the back of the room. She couldn’t hear the music, but it didn’t matter. We were so in the moment where God was present,” says Kiya. Campers attend a daily chapel in the morning, followed by generous ...

Project Updates – July 2010

Here is the latest news on the Camp projects currently underway: Full funding has been received for the refrigerator project. The Camp has been mandated by the County Health Department to replace the home-style refrigerators in use in areas where food is served or food concessions are sold, with commercial-grade refrigerators. Between a grant from a foundation, and the gifts from many friends of the Camp, enough funding has come in to purchase all of the new units. Thank you ...

Kids 2 Camp Report

With the arrival of summer, kids are now coming for their week of summer camp at Warm Beach. We have been receiving numerous requests for scholarship help to enable kids to come to camp. We are also working with more than 30 churches and social service agencies who work with at-risk youth. In order to bring groups of their kids to camp, we provide matching funds they can use to raise more money in this effort. We are excited about ...

These Two Did More than Clean!

In December 2009, Doug and Dorothy Wiebe ventured down from Abbotsford, BC, to enjoy an evening attending The Lights of Christmas. As they roamed about the event, they bumped into Camp volunteer photographer, Patrick Taylor, who offered them a tour in his brightly decorated golf cart. As he drove, Patrick told them about the volunteer opportunities at WBC. They were intrigued. This past Memorial Day Working Weekend, the Wiebes enthusiastically joined the small army of volunteers helping get the Camp ...
Family Camp Guests 2010

It’s Summer at Warm Beach Camp!

As I write this, our first major guest group of the summer is outside my office window, enjoying their family camp. The first horsemanship camp of the season is going on just down the hill at the Stables. The first Day Camp of the year, this one for our Special Friends, is in full swing in the big circus tent. And a brand new team of summer staffers have settled in alongside the year-round staff, ready to serve our campers ...
