All Aboard!

By Keith Yarter, The Lights of Christmas Director It was December, 2006, and the little Polar Express train was chugging its heart out during The Lights of Christmas. It struggled to make each turn around the Nativity Circle with families and friends laughing all the way. When that season ended, so did the heart of the Polar Express engine, Lil Toot. After a number of years of faithful service, it was now time to find a new engine to pull ...

Director’s Column

I am glad it is Christmas time As I write this, the global economy is under stress. Recent news talked of local businesses that are closing their doors. By the time you read this, our next president will have been elected. There is a profound sense that we are standing in a place and time we have never been before. By the way - it's Christmas time ... I am glad it is Christmas time: I know who Christmas is ...

What Happens the Rest of the Year?

By Eugene Barnes, Director of Guest Services A question that comes up often while I am working with Mike and Dakota, the draft horse team, as they pull the big wagon around the Tinhorn Town loop during The Lights of Christmas is, "So, what do you do the rest of the year?" I tell them that, as the Director of Guest Services, I have the privilege of working with a different team - Warm Beach Camp's Guest Service Team. As ...

The Lights of Christmas by the Numbers

The following information is a collection of interesting (and sometimes fascinating) statistics we have compiled about The Lights. The next time you need a conversation starter, feel free to drop a few of these numbers into your conversation.(Note: Unless otherwise specified, the information is based on annual numbers.) Grant Awarded for Cedar Lodge Renovation

By Nancy Nelson, Development Director After the phone call, I could have danced on my desk! The phone call was to let me know the trustees of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust had approved a $490,000 grant proposal for the renovation of the Camp's flag-ship building, Cedar Lodge. This will be the largest grant ever in the history of Warm Beach Camp. As a matter of fact, I have promised the staff that I WILL dance on my desk when ...

Halfway Around the World – Kids are still the Same

By Emily Lambert, Outdoor Education Coordinator Warm Beach Camp's ministry extended far beyond its home in Stanwood, Washington, this past August to a small country in eastern Africa. In partnership with Sister Connection, an organization that helps widows and orphans in war-torn Burundi, a team of staff from WBC traveled to help in the second annual youth camp for the children of widows in Burundi, held at the end of August. The camp took place at a local mission station ...

Do You Really Need a Will?

By Darrell Weiland, Director, Warm Beach Foundation In the United States of America, we have laws. Throughout our lives, different laws apply to us at different times. Our birth is registered as required by law. As teens, we face consequences if we violate traffic laws. As adults, we comply with laws in regards to purchasing a home, paying taxes, and in many more of life's activities. Most of our life is governed by law. When we die, our life's passing ...

WBC’s Online Reservations Proves Popular

By Scott Rossiter, Assistant Director of Guest Services The Camp's new online registration system now provides guests with an easy-to-use, 24-hours-a-day, way to place reservations for upcoming WBC events. Last April, the online event reservation system went live with an initial focus on summer events like Day Camps, W-Bar-B youth camps and Horsemanship camps. Randy Cloes – A Man on Mission

By Joanie Yonker, Executive Assistant When Randy Cloes said "Yes" to joining the Warm Beach Camp Board of Directors this past summer, little did he know that he was going to increase his mission-mindedness. You see, Randy has been "on mission" for years. Until last spring, Randy knew very little about Warm Beach Camp. Then, he was asked to consider joining the Board. He came to the spring board meeting and began to make inquiries about just what this Warm ...

Briefly…

Horseback Riding and Vaulting Lessons are being offered this winter. These weekly lessons are ideal for riders to sustain the riding improvements they experience during summer camp. For more information, contact Patti at Warm Beach Camp, or log onto the Camp's website. When the cost of fuel was sky-high, some people had to park their full-size pickup trucks, and others tried to sell them. If you have a full-size pickup that you've discovered you no longer really need, would you ...

Tony Campolo to Speak at Warm Beach Camp

"Jesus desperately wants you to allow Him to work through you to begin to change His world into the world He wills for it to be." These words, excerpted from Tony Campolo's book, You Can Make a Difference, paint a vivid picture of the message that will be shared at the next Potter's Wheel Weekend, February 13-15, 2009. Tony Campolo will be spending the weekend at Warm Beach Camp and those attending will not only have their views of the ...

Bob and Joan – Helping to Make it Happen!

By Jessica Beach, Volunteer Coordinator This being my first year as the Volunteer Coordinator for The Lights of Christmas, I have been a little nervous about recruiting, and scheduling more than 500 volunteers into 1,800 shifts for this momentous event. My co-workers have been assuring me (probably due to my periodic hyperventilation) that all will be well. Their confidence, which is certainly not rooted in my years of experience, made me suspicious that they had information that I did not. ...
