Spirit of Christmas
Jesus’ birth was a time of fulfilled hope, transcendent gratitude, and the rejoicing of a long-awaited miracle. Sprinkled throughout the ages, regardless of any Christmas tradition, the true meaning of celebrating this season has been divinely anchored to the feelings of those who witnessed Jesus’ birth.
All of us can recall the sweet anticipation of Christmas morning as a child, the traditions passed down from one generation to the next, and the shared meals with loved ones gathered around a table. Who can still remember waking in the middle of the night, shuffling out of your room, and the only visible light was from the brilliant glow of the Christmas tree? You would stand in awe and be filled with wonder, as the light danced around, reflecting off every ornament.
Just as the warm glow in the dead of night signaled to the shepherds that their Savior had been born, we were reminded that the Light of the World was in our midst, whether we were too young to fully grasp the significance of the connection. Now, every year as Christmas approaches, we are filled with the Spirit of Christmas, evoking wonder, nostalgic reflection, and holiday cheer. These feelings cannot be manufactured and are not a result of our perfectly curated rooms filled with just the right number of festive decorations.
Rather, we are invited to step into a space of wonder where countless individuals have come before us to share in the gift of Christ in our lives. Filled with gratitude and joy, we yearn to extend that gift to others by bringing hope and kindness to those around us during the holiday season. That is, I believe, one of the secrets behind the Spirit of Christmas. Simple gestures of generosity are amplified during this time to help remind others that they are loved, valued, and part of God’s family. As we prepare for Christmas, may we all be overcome with the love of Christ and extend that love to those around us.
