That’s Why…
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?
Matthew 6:25 NLT

“That’s why…” has kick started many reminders that people often give to each other. See if any of these sound familiar:
- That’s why you need to brush your teeth.
- That’s why you need to exercise.
- That’s why you don’t go over the speed limit.
Rewind to biblical times. The setting, a hillside with plenty of room to sit. The people gathered are traveling with and following Jesus. Jesus takes time to talk with the people closest to Him. His words are amazing. Filled with clarity and purpose, there is a contrast to the cultural norms of the day. Here are a few examples:
Good Deeds and Giving: Give to those in need, but do it in private, without fanfare and big announcements. Be discreet in helping others. Do good deeds. However, don’t do them for the sake of being admired by others. God the Father rewards good deeds and giving done in private.
Prayer: Don’t focus on praying in public. Seek a place of privacy to make your needs known. You don’t need complicated and impressive words. God already knows what you need before you pray. Follow the example of the prayer Jesus taught, known as the Lord’s Prayer.
Fasting: Fast privately. Look ready for the day. Be alert. Others need not know what you are doing. This is a time between you and God. Keep it between you and God.
Money and Possessions: Money and possessions will both fade away in your life. Don’t stress out over them. Don’t make them your main focus. Give first priority to the pursuit of God’s Kingdom. Trust God for His provision. Understand that you cannot serve money and God at the same time. God will provide for you far beyond His provision for the birds and the flowers, both of which He also provides for.
It is in the context of this that Jesus gives the best “That’s why” statement:
“That’s why I tell you not to worry about everyday life.”
Encouragement: Trust God with your life today. Trust God with the specific details and issues that cause you worry. He is trustworthy.
Dear Father God,
Today I trust You with every aspect of my life.
In Jesus name,
Amen
