Training America’s Future
On June 15, 2025, 97 young men with The American Legion Evergreen Boys State arrived at Warm Beach Camp with nervous anticipation for the week ahead. During the first session on Monday, they were overwhelmed by the new environment, the complexity of the information, and becoming acquainted with their peers. Then by mid-week, something transformational happened.
The Evergreen Boys State (EBS) program is offered to incoming seniors (16–17-year-olds) and is designed to simulate and emulate Washington State Government with a continuous update of current laws. Through this carefully curated program, the dedicated and passionate staff members teach the young men (delegates) about leadership, patriotism, and government. The delegates learn city-level to state-level government through classes, hands-on learning, and visits from government officials.
By Wednesday, the delegates elect their own government officials, ranging from city-level up to state-level roles within their peer group, and begin applying what they have learned to real-world scenarios. This is where the “magic” happens! Everything clicks for these delegates. By providing a safe space where they can use their newfound skills, qualities of confidence and leadership rise to the surface.
With EBS staff present in each room to supervise, the delegates are given the freedom to carry out all government procedures to completion. The delegates are given the challenge and opportunity of working with one another, voicing their opinions on a specific matter, and having to find middle ground in order to continue. This immersive program fosters responsibility, accountability, and respect for one another among the young men.
The knowledge and skills that these young men acquire during their week-long stay at Warm Beach Camp will be implemented in their lives for decades to come! They will soon be entering their senior year of high school and have the opportunity to be leaders amongst their peers. They are encouraged to engage with what matters most to them and help bring forth transformation within their local communities. Larry Sperry, Interim Director, explained, “Regardless of the job title they will hold one day, we want these men to be good, productive citizens and to be leaders wherever they go. Former Evergreen Boys State delegates have gone on to become teachers, mayors, policemen, firemen, and soldiers, to name a few.” A testament to the success of this transformational program.
The American Legion will offer the first co-ed programming in Washington State next year, aiming to make this impactful and life-changing experience more accessible. Tony Morea, Chairman of the Board, explained, “We’re excited. This program is designed to be educational, and we want to make this opportunity available for anyone who wants to join. In an effort to prepare for the integration, we have increased the number of female staff among other preparations to help create a welcoming and safe environment.”
Warm Beach Camp is grateful for the growing partnership with The American Legion. We have hosted them since 2014 and are looking forward to welcoming them back in 2026!
