Project Updates – November 2013

Here is the latest news on the Camp projects currently underway:

  • CLProjectExterior 275Work has slowed on the renovation project in lower Cedar Lodge while we wait for more building permits and inspections. The volunteers have moved outside where they are getting the new siding on and painted. The photo at right shows the bluff-side of lower Cedar Lodge with the new windows, doors, and siding, including to the new freight entrance door. The new offices going in to this area must be completed so there can be a re-shuffling of office space to open up the area where the new walk-in cooler and freezer will be installed. A major remodeling project like this requires a lot of careful choreography!
  • The native growth buffer was planted last month along the property line above Bayview Ranch House. This completes a requirement of our Conditional Use Permit that had to be done before any additional building permits could be received.
  • Several badly broken sidewalks near the Program Center and the Snack Shop have been removed. For now, they have either been replaced with gravel walkways, or not replaced at all. The sidewalk going to the Prayer Chapel had several tripping hazards that have been ground down.
  • Two new parking lots have been created near the Program Center. These will be used during The Lights of Christmas for the Joyland Concert Hall. To get the roadways ready for The Lights, a road grader is scheduled to come in late November and give our roads some much needed attention.
  • Two improvements are in the works at the Stables. The new manure shed will cost approximately $20,000, and when completed, will move the manure storage further from a stream that runs into Puget Sound. This will reduce the risk of any negative water quality impacts from the horses. We are seeking environmental funding for that project. The other project is new box stalls for the vaulting horses. This project will enable us to better care for the vaulting horses by keeping them indoors and out of the practice arena. Currently, we have to temporarily pasture horses on a secondary sacrifice pasture, which is not a sustainable practice as it compromises the pasture in winter time. We are awaiting bids for this project from the contractors.
  • Most work on projects comes to a close this time of year, but the planning goes on for the work that will be needed next year and beyond.

If you are interested in volunteering to help with any projects, whether you have a few hours or a few days, contact Jessica Wilson at the Camp or by email at jwilson@warmbeach.com.

God Speaks through Rosie

I have recently been given the opportunity to work with Rosie, one of our newer horses that we are bringing along in training here at the Warm Beach Horsemanship barn. I am always excited to get to know a new horse and their personality. However, it didn’t take long to realize this sweet mare harbored a lot of anxiety and worry. I tried to coax her into calmness with gentleness and patience, but she still didn’t fully trust me. When ...
