Three hundred women gathered at Warm Beach Camp in Stanwood, WA, the first weekend in May for a time to get away and be refreshed. And what an amazing time it was! At Summer Camp, counselors make the difference

When you think of “Camp,” what images float through your mind? The outdoors, games, crafts, s’mores? More than anything else, what makes Summer Camp fun and special are the people. Staff create the safe, fun, engaging atmosphere that impact campers. Over and over, the answer to the question, “What is your camper’s favorite memory about camp?” is, “Counselors.” Camp leadership recognize the sacred trust we are extended by the parents of campers. Parents want their children to have a safe ...

Sisterhood time and renewal of soul

In January of 2007, Barbara Bird was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because these treatments took such a toll on Barbara’s immune system, she ended up in the hospital numerous times. In March of 2007, Barbara underwent her last treatment of radiation. By this time, all of her hair had fallen out. ...

One rainy day in 2012 changed the course of Special Friends Camps

One rainy summer day in 2012 changed the course of Special Friends Day Camps, a camp for developmentally disabled adults, permanently. It was clearly going to be impossible to cram over 50 soggy Special Friends campers and their buddies into the tiny Pines building near the front entrance of the Camp but every one needed to get under cover. Laurie Fertello, Disabilities Ministries Director, quickly discovered that the Program Center Auditorium happened to be available that day. The Auditorium was ...

Snohomish Conservation District helps us Improve Habitat

Warm Beach Camp is pleased to receive a USDA Grant with their CREP program for hedgerow plantings along the ditches and stream running through the pastureland. Work has already begun to clear invasive, non-native Himalayan Blackberries and prepare for plants such as dogwood and ninebark. Get away to retreat and reconnect

You know you and your group need a retreat. A time to plan, brainstorm, and connect. Sometimes you have to completely disconnect to really connect. What does that mean? Well, imagine having a romantic dinner date in your own dining room. The table is set with beautiful flowers, candlelight, and a delicious meal. Sounds great, doesn’t it? That is until you hear the noises of your children with the babysitter in the playroom. Or the doorbell, your cellphone, or that ...

“Retreat!” Not just a battlefield command

[lead]Retreat! This command is not just for the military battlefield. It is for those times when life is too busy, too stretched, and simply overwhelming. Jesus understood the concept of retreat perfectly as indicated in Luke 5:16, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”[/lead] Do you find yourself in need of retreat? Daily we find individuals and groups getting the respite they need by spending time at Warm Beach Camp. Recently, we found these excerpts online after groups ...

Marriage Encounter – “Freeing! A fantastic time to connect…”

The Ministry of Marriage Encounter traces its roots back to Spain in the 1950s. Fr. Gabriel Calvo, a Catholic Priest, wanted a means whereby the married couples under his care could learn to communicate better within their married relationship. More importantly, Fr. Calvo wanted these couples to understand the crucial role God plays in a healthy marriage. The intense, interactive weekend known, worldwide, as Marriage Encounter is the result. The Warm Beach encounter is the oldest Marriage Encounter expression in ...

Men’s Advance: It’s not all fun and games!

Okay, so there is a lot fun and games… HUGE Highland Games, Cool Machines Show, Climbing Tower, High Ropes Course, Horseback Riding, and a host of other activities. The lights don’t get up there by themselves!

They don their layers of warm clothing, and many days, their rain gear. They buckle up their harnesses and climb into the 60-foot lifts. They make themselves ...

Special Friends bring more than just smiles

by Margaret 'Sparkles' Spears Special Friends Just those two words make me smile. I scan the Camp in my mind's eye and I see so many faces. Faces filled with compassion, trust, and willingness. Willing to be more gentle than normal, more patient than average, more loving than this life usually requires. At Special Friend's Camp, Counselors and Campers are paired at a ratio of 1:1 for the entire week of Camp. Campers with higher mobility needs may be paired ...

It Only Takes a Spark

It was a slow day at the craft table at Special Friends Day Camp. Lisa waited patiently for campers to come and join her but it seemed no one was biting. Lisa’s hopes began to rise as she saw a camper, who had not done a craft all week, approach the table with her “Buddy” (a Special Friends Camp Counselor). Unfortunately, the buddy just needed a bathroom break and was asking if her Special Friend could wait with Lisa. The camper ...

Coming of Age

Campers sing Grey Squirrel when they get mail. For every summer camp Warm Beach puts on we have a “Camp Pastor”. These pastors are responsible for giving devotions in the evening, getting to know the campers and counselors, and telling them about Jesus. These pastors come from all walks of life. For two weeks in July Warm Beach Camp invited Peggy Kroeger, YWAM Missionary and Warm Beach Camp staff alumni, to be one such pastor. She shares her experience in ...
