More than Enthusiasm, Please

Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes.

Proverbs 19:2 NLT

I am guilty of jumping into something with enthusiasm as my primary energy. When I find out how much knowledge is needed to be effective, it is very sobering, and quickly becomes hard work to do it right.

While enthusiasm can be a wonderful encourager, it is not a foundation on which to make decisions.

Good decisions are based on conviction, knowledge and application. It takes time to develop a good understanding of all three for effective living.

My convictions come from my faith in God. His word teaches me about relationships, finances, and His amazing love and justice. My knowledge also is based in the teaching from the Bible. Other sources of knowledge are evaluated against the standard of truth taught in the Bible. Application to provide help or a solution, are made with a thoughtful understanding of culture and a wise application of God-derived convictions to meet the need.

Here is an example:

CONVICTION:  Adoptive and Foster Families need support and encouragement for kids and parents to make it in this world.

KNOWLEDGE:  Trauma often effects adoptive and foster families. Being a family is different than a BIO (biological) family. In adoptive and foster families, family dynamics in matters of communication and correction flow differently than traditional families.

APPLICATION:  A specialized family camp for foster and adoptive families can focus and speak directly to the beautiful uniqueness of foster and adoptive families. Providing trauma-informed care and unconditional love goes a long way in providing every family a win.

Encouragement:  Think about something you have a lot of enthusiasm for. Evaluate how much knowledge you have regarding the opportunity. Consider what kind of application would be needed.  What kind of expertise, planning, and capital would be needed? Don’t waste an opportunity on enthusiasm alone.

Dear Jesus,

You spoke words of counting the cost of following You. You understand that enthusiasm alone will not carry the day.  You teach us to live with God-given convictions, seek wisdom and put good works into this world that help others.  Please guide us in this today.  In Jesus name, Amen

God Speaks through Rosie

I have recently been given the opportunity to work with Rosie, one of our newer horses that we are bringing along in training here at the Warm Beach Horsemanship barn. I am always excited to get to know a new horse and their personality. However, it didn’t take long to realize this sweet mare harbored a lot of anxiety and worry. I tried to coax her into calmness with gentleness and patience, but she still didn’t fully trust me. When ...
