Update on Projects – September 2012

Here is the latest news on the Camp projects currently underway:

  • The Special Friends Camping program moved to its new home, Chinook Village, this summer. With funds from Men’s Advance, Women’s Retreat, and a couple of foundation grants, we were able to make improvements to the Nurse’s Station and associated restroom and to the Chinook Cabins. Drainage in the center of camp was also improved, and a perimeter fence was built. Now that summer is over, we have time to improve the lighting in the Longhouse, add ADA accessible bathroom stalls, and improve the fire pit. Over 160 Special Friends Campers experienced the wonder of Camp at Chinook this summer. They loved the new facility.
  • Several projects were completed this summer with volunteer labor and materials purchased with funds received from a number of Camp donors. These included re-Table_Project_250staining the exterior of Olympic View Lodge, assembly and installation of a new chemical storage for the pool, a facelift for the RV restrooms, new decking and corrugated roofing for the Cedar Lodge deck, building ten new picnic tables, and replacing the roof on one staff cottage and windows in several others. With a generous gift from the Myungsun Church in Korea, a new memorial granite table has been installed on a grassy overlook of Port Susan Bay.
  • As we go into the fall, much work is still going on around the grounds. New entrance signs are being installed with gifts given through a memorial fund. As funds are available, improvements are being done to expand parking for The Lights of Christmas, along with work to consolidate some of the storage for The Lights. Renovation work is nearly complete on the landscaping around the new Cedar Lodge addition and the painting of the new exterior. Work continues on installing buffer planting in sensitive growth areas, and putting up signage marking the Native Growth Protection Areas as required by our conditional use permit.
  • Some new projects just getting underway include: installation of some new park benches, needed repairs to the dike road, drainage work on the play field at W-Bar-B Ranch, and drainage work and prep work for a new manure containment facility at the Stables. A couple more projects beginning at the Riding Arena are: replacing some rotten posts and building a new announcer’s stand next to the grandstands. A behind-the-scenes project is the replacement of the server on the Camp’s computer system.

There really is a lot going on! If you would be interested in volunteering to help with any projects, whether you have a few hours or a few days, contact Jessica Wilson by phone at 1-800-228-6724 ext. 2276, or by email.

God Speaks through Rosie

I have recently been given the opportunity to work with Rosie, one of our newer horses that we are bringing along in training here at the Warm Beach Horsemanship barn. I am always excited to get to know a new horse and their personality. However, it didn’t take long to realize this sweet mare harbored a lot of anxiety and worry. I tried to coax her into calmness with gentleness and patience, but she still didn’t fully trust me. When ...
